To get lightning photos you want to set the camera on a tripod (you can get tiny ones for like $10) leave the shutter open for some length of time without touching the camera (there will be some setting to set the exposure time, usually about 15 seconds max) and it will have a better chance of catching the lightning.

If it's in the day time it gets a bit trickier because then you have to change the ISO and F-Stop setting to let in less light over time otherwise the photo will just be white from too much light.
